2205 duplex stainless steel welding requirements are high, usually need to use its chemical composition and performance to match the welding consumables to ensure that the welded joints have excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The following are commonly used welding rod and wire selection:
1. Welding Rod Selection
- E2209-16: This is a commonly used electrode for welding 2205 duplex stainless steel in accordance with AWS A5.4. The alloy composition of this electrode is similar to that of 2205 duplex steel, and it is mainly used for manual arc welding (SMAW), where the weld seam has a duplex organization that provides excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion.
2. Welding Wire Selection
- ER2209The wire is suitable for gas shielded welding (GTAW, MIG), in accordance with AWS A5.9 standard. The chemical composition of ER2209 wire is designed to be similar to 2205 duplex stainless steel, and the same duplex organization is formed after welding, which ensures the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the weld.
3. caveat
- Pre-heating and post-heating: 2205 Duplex steels are usually welded without preheating, but it is necessary to control the interlayer temperature and keep it below 150°C to avoid grain coarsening in the weld heat affected zone.
- Cooling Control: Rapid cooling to room temperature after welding maintains the proper austenite to ferrite ratio in the welded joint and ensures a two-phase structure of the material.
- nitrogen protection: In some cases, the addition of nitrogen protection can increase the percentage of austenite in the weld process and improve weld properties.
These welding consumables and their use ensure that 2205 duplex steel welded joints have good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
